[focused on] newborns | a water birth

I got completely lost in this beautiful images by Carolyn Spranger Photography. Memories of my own birthing experience. Moments to always remember - the very second you became a Mother. xo

The Story:
This was my first birth that i've had the honor of photographing.  Kim, the midwife (https://www.facebook.com/KimLendertsHomebirthMidwifery?ref=ts) suggested me to them.  They had a wonderful hypnobabies water home birth at 41wks 1day.  Mom was calm and relaxed for her labor.  Once her pushing stage came she struggled finding a comfortable position in the tub.  After an hour of pushing a beautiful baby girl was born.  The birth was almost missed!  Mom stopped and said 'is there a baby?' and we all looked while dad reached down to grab her.  They had no ultrasounds during pregnancy so it was a surprise what they were having, dad had to lift the towel just to see.  I was honored to be there to shoot this magical event, and mom and dad will treasure these images for a lifetime as this will be their only child.

  3. I couldn't imagine anything better. What a neat experience! You did wonderfully, Carolyn, and especially of course the parents and midwife did wonderfully in their roles as well! Thank you so much for sharing this. Did they specifically say they wanted all black and white? Because I can't imagine it being in color. It tells a story from beginning event till end, and it should be in black and white. I'm really enjoying viewing the beauty of this. Thanks again, and I wish the little family all the very best.

Fascinating! I LOVE the one when the baby is emerging in the water so calmly. AND of course when the father checks under the towel for the gender. Awesome pictures!!

  8. Great job capturing the raw emotion of the day. I'm guessing you used OCF and if so, you rocked it.

  10. Thanks for the kind words!

@kaari- I do them all in B&W to keep them uniform and it saves on trying to fix white balance with horrible lighting and any 'birth distractions' that there may be are hidden. it leaves the focus on the emotion. I do give them some in color which are mostly of the baby.

@the family K- no OCF! actually, i had my 580 with me and when i showed up it was broken! wouldn't even turn on. i think it was a blessing though, I just relied on the little light i had and HIGH ISOs and a nice noiseware program afterwards :)
